
GIRLS BASKETBALL LAST NIGHT:
Washington Catholic dropped their opener at the Bird Cage to Shakamak 44-12. Shakamak improved to 3-1 on the season, WC returns to action Thursday at home with North Central.
The Washington Lady Hatchets notched their first win on the road at South Knox 44-30. Alaina Thorne at 16 points and Jesse Ledgerwood added 14 for the win. The Hatchets will host Heritage Hills on Thursday.
Barr-Reeve lost a tough one after trailing 19-3 after the first quarter, they did battle back but lost 31-33. Barr-Reeve was led by Colleen Trambaugh with 12 points. JV Vikings pulled out a close one 28-24. Emma Knepp led the JV with 15 points!!

Sasha Stefanovic scored 23 points and hit five of six 3-point attempts, and the seventh-ranked Purdue Boilermakers beat Bellarmine 96-57 in the season opener at Mackey Arena. The senior guard scored 12 straight points on four 3-pointers as part of a 17-2 run in the second half. The Boilers hit 16 3-pointers en route to their ninth straight season-opening victory. Zach Edey added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Isaiah Thompson scored 15 for the Boilermakers. Brandon Newman poured in 14 off the bench, and Jaden Ivey contributed 11. All Big-Ten big man Trevion Williams scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench for the Boilers, which host Indiana State Friday night. Purdue announced before the game that freshmen Trey Kaufman-Renn and Brian Waddell will redshirt.
All-American forward Trayce Jackson-Davis had 21 points and 14 rebounds, and Indiana held on for a 68-62 win over Eastern Michigan at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers led by as many as 21 early in the second half in Mike Woodson’s first game as head coach, but Eastern Michigan closed to within one with under three minutes to go. Xavier Johnson went coast-to-coast for a layup with 16 seconds to go to put the Hoosiers up by four, and Jackson-Davis made a pair of free throws with six seconds to go to cap the scoring. The Hoosiers never trailed after jumping out to a 10-0 lead. Johnson scored 14 and Rob Phinisee added seven off the bench. IU hosts Northern Illinois Friday night.
Butler overcame a poor shooting night to defeat IUPUI 56-47 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs shot 34 percent from the field and made just 7-of-25 3-point attempts.
The Indiana Pacers continue their four-game Western Conference road trip Wednesday night against the Denver Nuggets. The Pacers held on to beat the Sacramento Kings Sunday night to open the trip 1-1. Guard Malcolm Brogdon is expected to play after missing the last two games with a non-COVID illness.
Purdue entered the College Football Playoff rankings at number 19 Tuesday night. The Boilers upset then third-ranked Michigan State Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium to improve to 6-3 on the season. It is the first time since the CFP rankings began in 2014 that the Boilermakers have been ranked. Jeff Brohm’s squad looks for another upset Saturday afternoon when the Boilers take on fourth-ranked Ohio State in Columbus. Notre Dame moved up one spot to ninth. The Fighting Irish cruised past Navy last week and jumped Wake Forest in the rankings. Notre Dame is 8-1 and plays at Virginia Saturday night.
