Kyle Larson used a great final pit stop and went on to win the race and the NASCAR Cup Series title at Phoenix Raceway. Larson went from fourth to first on a pit stop under caution with under 30 laps to go, passing the other three championship contenders Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and Chase Elliott. Larson held off a challenge from Truex Jr. with 20 laps to go and went on to win by just under half a second. Truex Jr. finished second, followed by Hamlin, while the defending series champion Elliott came home fifth. Larson won a season-high ten races, the most in the Cup Series since Jimmie Johnson won ten in 2007. The 29-year-old California native led a race-high 107 laps to capture his first Cup title in his first year with Hendrick Motorsports. It caps a major comeback for Larson, who was suspended for most of the 2020 season after using a racial slur during a live streamed virtual race.
Purdue football did not crack the AP Top 25 after upsetting previously third-ranked Michigan State. The Boilermakers are 6-3 with a pair wins over top-three teams, and Purdue is first among teams receiving votes. Jeff Brohm’s squad will try to pull another major upset Saturday at Ohio State. The Boilers opened as 19-point underdogs to the sixth-ranked Buckeyes. Notre Dame moved up one spot to seventh after dominating Navy 34-6. The Fighting Irish are 8-1 and play at Virginia Saturday night. Georgia is the unanimous number one team, followed by Cincinnati, Alabama, Oklahoma and Oregon. The College Football Playoff rankings will be released Tuesday.
The Indiana Pacers held on for a 94-91 win over the Sacramento Kings Sunday night. The Blue and Gold led by as many as 15 before the Kings made a run. It was Indiana’s first road victory of the season, and first in the California capital since 2018. Caris LeVert led the Pacers with 22 points, while T.J. McConnell added 18, and Domantas Sabonis scored 17. Myles Turner contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds, and rookie Chris Duarte poured in 15. Sacramento took a three-point lead with an 11-1 run to start the fourth quarter, but Indiana fought back with 10 straight points of its own. McConnell made a free throw with 2.5 seconds to play to give Indiana a three-point lead, and the Pacers stole the inbound attempt before the Kings could attempt a game-tying 3-pointer. The Pacers were without Malcolm Brogdon for the second straight game due to a non-COVID illness. Indiana’s four-game Western Conference road trip continues Wednesday against the Denver Nuggets.
