Commissioners discuss county building security, approve grant application

The Daviess County Commissioners met Tuesday morning with Commissioner Nathan Gabhart chairing the meeting in the absence of Commission president Michael Taylor. The County received two bids for paving projects on County Road 1400E. The bids were taken under advisement. The County has also received a preliminary engineering agreement from CSX on the Montgomery Bridge project.   The $18,700 expense will be paid from the cumulative bridge fund.
The Commissioners also heard from Sheriff Gary Allison on the need for duress alarms as well as metal and luggage scanners at the Court House. Allison also recommended alarm systems be placed in the Court House, Government Center, and the Community Corrections offices. The Commissioners approved the purchase of duress alarms for the Court House offices, and gave Allison permission to investigate options for a luggage scanner and metal detector.
In other business, the Commissioners gave the Health Department permission to submit a grant application. The grant would provide an additional $50,000 to continue free COVID testing for another six months.The Commissioners also heard from several not-for-profit community service organizations requesting continued county funding in the next budget cycle.
At the end of the meeting Commissioner Gabhart reported on the ongoing combined central dispatch discussions with the City of Washington. Gabhart said there is an overall commitment from both sides, with discussions now focused on cost sharing and the make up of the governing and financial boards.
