The Washington Hatchet Girls Tennis team are sectional champs as they defeated Vincennes Lincoln for the crown on Saturday 4 to 1. The Lady Hatchets improved to 21 and 0 and will move on to the Jasper Regional tomorrow. Washington will play Bloomfield in the semi-finals, while Jasper and Loogootee will meet in the other semi-final match up. The two winners will be back for the championship Wednesday.
Softball sectionals begin this week as Washington will host the 3A tournament at the Sports Complex. The Hatchets face Princeton tomorrow night at 6:30pm, Pike Central will play Vincennes Lincoln in game two. Live coverage tomorrow night beginning at 6:15pm on Memories 107.9fm.
At Loogootee, the host Lions will play North Daviess, while Barr Reeve will await the winner for the championship.
At South Knox, Linton will play South Knox, while North Knox faces Eastern Greene in game two.
For the fourth time, the Ice Man Scott Dixon will lead the field to green in the Indianapolis 500. The 40-year-old Dixon captured the pole position Sunday with a four-lap average of 231.685 miles per hour, besting Colton Herta by .03 miles per hour over the 10-mile run. It is Dixon’s fourth pole at Indy, his first since 2017, and he was joined by all three of his Chip Ganassi Racing teammates in the Fast Nine. The front row was rounded out by 20-year-old Rinus VeeKay, the youngest driver to ever start on the front row. VeeKay will start one spot ahead of his boss, Ed Carpenter. Fan favorite and 2013 “500” winner Tony Kanaan will roll off fifth in Sunday’s race, while Alex Palou earned the sixth starting spot. Former winners Ryan Hunter-Reay and Helio Castroneves will start seventh and eighth, and Marcus Ericsson rounded out the third row. The 105th Running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place Sunday, May 30th.
In the NASCAR Cup Series, Chase Elliott won in a rain-shortened debut race at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The inaugural Texas Grand Prix was marred by rain and a violent crash that resulted from the poor visibility. The race was called after 54 of 68 laps, as the defending Cup Series champion earned his first win of the season. Elliott has won five of the last six road course races, and has 12 career victories. The win was Hendrick Motorsports’ 268th Cup victory, which tied Petty Enterprises for the most wins by a team in series history. It was also the 800th victory for Chevrolet in NASCAR’s top series. Elliott’s Hendrick teammate Kyle Larson finished second, while Joey Logano rounded out the top three.
The New York Yankees completed a sweep of the Chicago White Sox with 5-4 victory on a walk-off walk Sunday afternoon in the Bronx. Elsehwhere in the Major Leagues, Javy Baez broke a scoreless tie in the 10th inning with a two-run home run, and the Chicago Cubs went on to defeat their rival St. Louis Cardinals 2-1. The Minnesota Twins scored three runs in the top of the 10th and beat Cleveland 8-5, and Milwaukee cruised to a 9-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. The Kansas City Royals defeated the Detroit Tigers 3-2 thanks to a walk-off, two-run homer from Carlos Santana.
