American Cancer Society seeks two-dollar cigarette tax hike

A two-dollar cigarette tax hike in Indiana is the goal of the American Cancer Society. Bryan Hannon with the organization says the hope to see at least 40-thousand Hoosiers be encouraged to kick their addiction by raising the tax, and he hopes that revenue will be put back into public health funding. Hannon says there is a reason Indiana is 48th in the nation in public health funding. He said it’s because the state has “ignored it for too many years.” Hannon tells Indy Politics the state would bring in 350-million in revenue in the first year of the tax, if it is passed by state lawmakers.
