The Daviess County Highway Department is looking at an 18% drop in funding from Motor Vehicle Highway budget monies the county recieves from the state. That was the word to the Daviess County Commissioners from Highway Supervisor Phil Cornelius on Tuesday. The drop is due in part to decreases in gas tax collection and an increase of the gas tax going to the state. That 18% loss amounts to $718,000. Cornelius said he was concerned with a 50% restriction from the state and how the money can be spent. He says that restriction cannot be met and a lot of other counties also cannot do it.
President of the Commissioners Nathan Gabhart said all of the county’s available funding options will need to be opened up
Gabhart also said he suspects the legislature is going to do all they can to make it less worse. He added that the commissioners are not going to do anything detrimental to the operation of the highway department.
