City officials hear appeal concerning ordinance violation

city-of-washington-2-2

The Board of Public Works and Safety on Monday heard an appeal from Rosemary Harder.  Harder is a Martin County resident who owns property in Washington had had received a violation notice for high grass and weeds.   Harder said she had received a notice from the Building Commissioner’s Office on May 11, citing the violation of the City’s high grass ordinance.  Harder said ten days later she mowed the grass.   Harder said the city’s notification said the grass on her property was between 14 and 18 inches high, and that a week later the City mowed the grass and billed her $187.   She said that neighbors did not see the City mowing the grass.   City Code Enforcement Officer Brandt Powden said City workers had mowed the grass on Harder’s property between 10 and 10:30 a.m. on May 27.   He said the city workers would not have mowed the grass if the grass did not need mowing.   Without photographic evidence, the Board voted to remove the $75 administrative fee from Harder’s bill but still charge her $112 for the mowing.
In other action the Board of Works approved six curb and sidewalk replacement projects.
