It’s Police Week

Friday is Peace Officer’s Memorial Day and this week is national Police Week.  Even though the annual local observance was cancelled due to COVID-19, Washington Mayor Dave Rhoads still presented Fraternal Order of Police Lodge President Keith Hinderliter and Vice President Derrick Devine with a Proclamation declaring this week Police Week and May 15 Peace Officers Memorial Day.
The Proclamation proclaims that members of the Washington Police Department, and Daviess County Sheriff’s Department play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of it’s citizens; and it’s important all citizens understand the problems duties and responsibilities of law enforcement.  It also states that the departments recognize their duty to the public by safeguarding life and property and protecting against violence and disorder and the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression and intimidation.  I
Washington and Daviess County citizens are being asked to observe Friday as Peace Officer’s Memorial Day and commemorate officers who dedicate themselves to the community and honor those who have given their lives or have been disabled in the line of duty.
