One out of every 5 girls and 1 out of every 10 boys are sexually molested or assaulted; Over 400,000 children will be sexually assaulted before they are 18; and, a child molester will commit their crime 120 to 200 times before being caught.

Those were just a few of the stats presented at a workshop/training session on Protecting our Children held last week at the Washington Free Methodist Church. The workshop was conducted by the Southwest Indiana Child Advocacy Center Coalition or SWICACC. Today WAMW News begins a series on that workshop.

One of the speakers at the session was Huntingburg Detective Tyler Stivers who works sex crimes in his city.  He says child sex crimes are hard to talk about and sometimes considered taboo and that has to stop…

Tammy Lampert, who is Director SWICACC says child sex safety needs to be talked about as non nonchalantly and openly as fire and disaster safety since most molesters are people children know and trust.

We will continue our series on Protecting Our Children tomorrow on WAMW News.
