Sunday night’s local commemoration of Martin Luther King Day at the Beulah AME church  in Washington featured music from an Amish choir, The Harvest Church Praise band and local parishioners.   A packed church, including Mayor Dave Rhoads listened to one of the featured speakers, Eddie Howard,   the pastor of the Bloomington AME Church.

He gave a sermon called a “A Mind to Work” and compared King to the biblical story of Nehemiah saying both men could have taken advantage of  other opportunities, but instead made up their minds to deny self and work for the betterment of all peoples…

Howard said King worked even though times got real rough…

The service also featured speakers talking about local history namely “Big Dave” DeJernett.  He was an avid pioneer of integration in early basketball in the United States. He is best known for leading the integrated Washington Hatchets to the Indiana state title as a high school junior 90 years ago.
