Holding Schools Harmless for ILEARN Results

When the new ILEARN test results were released last fall, legislative leaders promised to expedite a hold harmless bill during the 2020 session so schools wouldn’t be left in limbo. This week, we kept that promise by passing Senate Bill 2, which would hold K-12 schools harmless for the 2019 and 2020 ILEARN test scores.

In 2018, Indiana transitioned its statewide test from ISTEP to ILEARN. This new test was developed by a group of educators under the direction of the Indiana Department of Education (DOE). They decided the passing score should be set higher than that of ISTEP. This higher standard resulted in fewer passing grades, which, in turn, resulted in a negative effect on the assessment of our state’s schools and teachers.

My colleagues and I know our teachers are working hard to give our kids a great education, and I was happy to support SB 2 when it came before the Senate and passed unanimously this week.

Governor Delivers 2020
State of the State Address

Earlier this week, Gov. Eric Holcomb gave the 2020 State of the State address, highlighting Indiana’s many achievements over the last year as well as his goals and priorities for the coming year.

Indiana continues to set records year after year with increasing job commitments and capital investment. Our state has also set aside strong reserves, continuing Indiana’s fiscally responsible track record and protecting our state in the event of an economic downturn.

Our state also continues to prioritize K-12 education with an unprecedented increase of $763 million for K-12 education in the recent state budget.

Like Senate Republicans, Gov. Holcomb is working to increase health care cost transparency, hold K-12 schools harmless for ILEARN test results, reduce government debt, and raise the smoking and vaping age to 21.

A copy of Gov. Holcomb’s speech can be found here.
