Staying Connected Through
the 2020 Session

On Jan. 6, the Indiana General Assembly will reconvene for the 2020 legislative session.

My fellow lawmakers and I will examine and vote on a wide variety of legislative proposals during that time, and I value your input on these topics.

There are a number of ways for you to stay involved in the process, such as taking my 2020 legislative survey. This survey is a great opportunity for you to share your thoughts on topics and issues facing Indiana. I hope you’ll take time to complete it by Jan. 6.

It is an honor to represent you at the Statehouse, and I encourage residents of Senate District 39 to contact me with any questions or comments you may have in regard to the upcoming legislative session. Feel free to contact my office by phone at 800-382-9467 or by email at Senator.Bassler@iga.in.gov if I may ever be of assistance to you.

Broadband Grants Available

Applications for the second round of the Next Level Connections Broadband Grant program are now open.

Established by the General Assembly in 2019, the $100 million Next Level Broadband program is the largest single state investment in broadband, and works to ensure reliable and affordable broadband service is available to all areas of our state.

Broadband providers and utility cooperatives can apply for up to $5 million to expand service to unserved areas if they provide a minimum 20% match of the total allowable project costs.

Unserved areas are those without at least one telecommunication provider offering internet fast enough to provide the most basic services – at least 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload.

In order to apply, applicants must first submit a letter of intent including a list of census blocks the project would serve.

Reminder: Page at the Senate

The Indiana Senate is now accepting applications for the 2020 Senate Page Program.

Through the full-day program, students in grades six through 12 can tour Indiana’s Statehouse, listen to debates and help staff with age-appropriate tasks. Students also have the opportunity to meet with their state senator.

The Senate Page Program will begin in January and run through early March. Positions fill quickly, so it is important to apply early. Pages are scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the legislative session. They begin their day at 8:30 a.m. and are dismissed at 3:30 p.m. Groups serve together on Wednesdays. Serving as a page is considered an excused absence from school.

Gov. Eric Holcomb recently announced the 2020 Girls Go CyberStart Competition will be held in Indiana for the
third year.

This fun, thought-provoking competition is a great way to encourage high school girls to consider careers in tech at a time when the cybersecurity field is experiencing a shortage of experts.

Registration is now open for the competition, which will commence Jan. 13, 2020.

Additional details and preregistration can be found at girlsgocyberstart.org.
