7 Southwest Indiana kids died of abuse or neglect in 2018

DCS CHILD FATAL REPORT

        The Indiana Department of Child Services released their annual Child Fatality Report a few days ago. 

        The report states that 242 children died in Indiana in calendar year 2018.  65 of those deaths were due to abuse or neglect.  52 of those 65 were 3 years old or younger.

Ten of the 65 victims (15%) included in the report had prior substantiated history with DCS.

Most common causes of death:

  • Abusive head trauma: 16 deaths (25%)
  • Drowning: 8 deaths (12%)
  • Poisoning/acute intoxication: 8 deaths (12%)

 

        In Southwest Indiana, Knox, Gibson,  Dubois, Lawrence and Monroe Counties had 1 death each due to abuse. Vanderburgh and Orange Counties had 1 death each due to neglect.
