Washington Rotary Update

The Rotary Club of Washington (IN), had a great month of October! Highlights include donating $2000 to the Daviess County 4-H Building project & inducting a new member, and five meetings!

On October 16th the Rotary Club of Washington had the great privilege of donating $1000 to the Daviess County 4-H building project. We received a matching grant to make our gift $2000! We are excited to see this expansion project continue to take shape and benefit the youth of our community.

Rotary Club President, David Stowers, remarked, “We are grateful for the opportunity to help the Daviess County 4-H with their ongoing expansion project. We look forward to seeing the youth of our community enjoy these new facilities. Our Rotary motto is service above self and this is another opportunity for us as Rotarians to live that motto.”

 

On October 2nd, We were pleased to welcome Misty Fisher from Gene B. Glick Company to our Rotary Club yesterday. Misty works for the Glick Company at their Jamestown Square apartments in Washington. She provides member relations to all of the residents at Jamestown.

Jamestown has 6 local employees. The Glick company has was started over 75 years ago and specializes in all housing. Jamestown is recognized as HUD housing. Jamestown has partnered with Purdue Extension-Daviess to provide a food pantry and 4-H groups for the residents there.

Our Rotary Club was proud to plant apple trees at Jamestown during our Centennial celebration. We were excited to hear that they picked there first apples this year!

On October 9th, We welcomed our newest Rotarian, Natalie Smith, to our Rotary Club of Washington today. Natalie is a lifelong resident of Washington and currently works as the Mortgage Loan Officer at Springs Valley Bank & Trust.We are excited to welcome Natalie to our club!!

Shelly Shake from the Heartbeat of Washington , presented the Rotary Club with a copy of Stone Soup from their festival this past weekend.Rotary had given a 100th Anniversary grant which purchased 100 books and entertainment  for the attendees.   Congratulations to Heartbeat of Washington, Indiana for such a wonderful event!

On October 16th, We had the pleasure of welcoming Ben Miller, Executive Director at Camp Illiana during our weekly meeting today.Ben spoke about all of the great things going on at Camp. They serve over 7000 individuals every where. More than half of those individuals are coming from outside Daviess Co. Each summer over 2900 students come to summer camp at Camp Illiana. They employ 25 people during the summer and serve over 40K meals. They host the annual 6th grade day for Washington Community Schools. They also host 13 Walk to Emmaeus events every year.

We are grateful for the impact Camp has on our community!

 

On October23rd, Many thanks to Bryant Niehoff, the Executive Director of the Daviess County Economic Development Corporation for being our featured presenter during our weekly meeting today!

He spoke about the various projects he has been working on since he started 10 months ago.

Those projects include but are not limited too:

Quality of Place & Tourism Plan

Housing Study

Westgate Master Plan

I-69 Development

He spoke at length regarding I-69 in the development going on there.

Current development of 69 includes Olon, M&C Technology, Isoflex, & the current construction of Hucks gas station. He also talked about the strength of the infrastructure at exit 62 including the new water tower as well as streets everything to make those sites attractive to potential businesses.

He mentioned that The DCEDC is consistently meeting with Site Selectors and real estate developers highlighting the I-69 Corridor in Daviess County. Bryant mentioned that our traffic counts on I-69 have increased 10-30% annually since it opened. Traffic counts & the availability of housing is big factor in determining if a business will locate here.

The DCEDC is optimistic that development will continue around I-69 and throughout Daviess Co.

On October 30th, We had the great opportunity of hearing from Owen Jarrett yesterday during our weekly meeting. Owen shared with the Club his experience attending the recent Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) retreat held at Bradford Woods.

Our presenter was Tracy Cook, Director of the Power House. Tracy presented an overview of the organization, including ways the community can contribute to their goal of changing lives one at a time. Service above self at its best.
