Daviess Community Hospital athletic trainers from the CORE Center, including Misty Petro, Kelsey Lepore and Scott Sell, joined Teddy Cline, NRP and other paramedics and EMTs from DCH and Pike County EMS in a training session held in Washington in July. The joint training session was to practice appropriate management of the spine injured athlete in advance of the upcoming fall sports season.

Scott Sell, DCH’s director of athletic training said, “The joint training session gets us all on the same page communicating on how we are treating our injured athletes.”

This was the second year the DCH athletic trainers and EMS personnel trained together and they each recognize the importance of this collaboration. “Things are different when it involves football pads,” Sell said. “We did multiple mock scenarios with the EMS crews to try and prepare for any situation we may face this fall.”

The common goal of the two entities during the training and on the field this fall is the health and safety of the athlete. The primary focus of the training session was responding to head and neck injuries and how to properly remove the player’s equipment.

Teddy Cline, DCH EMS operations manager, said, “It’s a really good thing for us to work together. We have a crew at every football game in Daviess County and it’s important for us to practice with the athletic trainers.”

Chris Young, Pike County EMS Director, was also pleased with the event. “It was a great event to help us be prepared for an injury at a sporting event,” said Young. “We communicate with each other to exactly what is expected from each other.”
