A building at the Crane Base in Martin County was under a “Shelter in Place” designation for a short time Wednesday afternoon.
Naval Support Activity at Crane says that according to initial reports, at 2 p.m. construction workers in the area unearthed an unknown item. Crane is a World War 1 era installation and Police, Fire and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal units responded as a precaution as the item was treated as if it were an explosive ordnance. It was removed without incident and taken to a safe area.
Credit was given to the prompt response and training, readiness and preparation of the various teams at Crane that were involved in the matter. There were no injuries, and an all clear was given and the base continued normal operations.
