Motorist flees police and crashes

At approximately 12:30 am Sunday, Lawrence County, IL police notified Indiana police they were searching for a vehicle involved in a hit and run crash. The vehicle had front end damage and was last seen eastbound on US 50 toward the Illinois/Indiana state line. Moments later, Lawrence County advised they were in pursuit of the vehicle and the driver had turned off the headlights.

Indiana State Police and Knox County Sheriff’s Department deployed stop sticks on US 50 just inside Indiana. The vehicle passed through the area at a high rate of speed and drove over the stop sticks. The vehicle continued for approximately 500 feet before losing control. The vehicle entered the grassy median, struck an earth embankment and came to a final rest.

The driver was identified as Daniel Fehrenbacher, 60, of Ingraham, IL. Troopers believe Fehrenbacher was not wearing a seat belt. He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes where he is currently being treated for his injuries.

This is an on-going investigation and criminal charges are pending. Troopers also believe alcohol was a factor.
