Washington’s City Council welcomed Tyler Holcomb as the City’s newest police officer.  Holcomb, a 2016 graduate of Washington High School was sworn-in by Mayor Joe Wellman at the beginning of Monday’s Council meeting.

In regular business, the Council unanimously approved an ordinance changing the zoning of property on the southwest corner of West Main and 5th Streets from Industrial to Commercial-2, which allows for the construction of an apartment complex on the location.    The Council also heard the first reading of an ordinance required by the last session of the General Assembly.  The new ordinance addresses the granting of a building permit if there is a conflict of interest on the part of the Building Commissioner or Code Enforcement Officer.  In reading the proposed ordinance, City Attorney Tim Dant emphasized that the ordinance was the result of a recently enacted state law.

Mayor Wellman also announced that he would be traveling to Chicago on an Economic Development trip with Radius Indiana…

Also at Monday night’s meeting, the City Council heard a request from a group of Washington High School students to place a “Free Little Library” at Eastside Park.   Jacob Davis, Burkley McCarthy, and Mac Heacock told the Council that the little libraries are locations where people can leave or borrow books.  The group said there first location was placed at Heaven’s Kitchen and the second was placed at the Washington Nursing Center.   Both locations have been successful and they are looking to expand with a third little library at the Park.   The Council gave unanimous support to the project, but final approval has to come from the Park Board.
