One person was killed and at least two were injured in an explosion that was likely caused by natural gas early Sunday morning in Jeffersonville.

The explosion occurred on at a house on Assembly Road, said the city’s fire chief. In a statement on Facebook, authorities warned that damage was extensive, and that some debris was “elevated” and could fall.

At least 15 homes were damaged from the explosion, which totally destroyed the home in which it originated.

The city condemned many of the houses.

“The City of Jeffersonville is deeply saddened by Sunday’s home explosion. At this time, we know one life has been lost and others were injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and the entire Capitol Hills neighborhood,” said Mayor Mike Moore.

“We greatly appreciate our first responders and depend on them at a time like this. We are a strong community and are lucky to live in an area that cares about its neighbors. This impacts us all.”

Indiana State Police were assisting city firefighters and police in the investigation.
