USS Indianapolis Being Moved to Indiana Military Museum in Vincennes

Six years of efforts have paid off and the USS Indianapolis is coming to Indiana. Its new home will be the Indiana Military Museum in Vincennes.

A dedication of the Nuclear Submarine Monument will be held 11 a.m. on June 18 at the museum. It will be a memorial to those who not only served on the SSN-697, but the two previous ships that carried the name “Indianapolis”.

The monument will include the sub’s original conning tower which is placed on a simulated concrete hull. The appearance of the monument will give the visitor the impression of the sub approaching the surface.

The dedication ceremony is open to the public and is expected to attract attendance of numerous former crew members and their families, as well as four of the ships former captains and other Navy dignitaries.
