Moon landing anniversary events planned at Purdue

Purdue University plans a series of events to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, the first landing on the moon. The university trained many of the astronauts, engineers, flight controllers and other people who participated in the mission.

The “Return to Entry” exhibit at Purdie’sRingel Gallery continues through May 11.

A special Neil Armstrong archive exhibit continues through Aug. 16.

Thursday, July 18

3 p.m. “Go or No-Go” The Untold Story of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing featuring Gene Kranz, Apollo 11 flight director; Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. This is a ticketed event. Registration is required. Seating is limited. Registration will begin on June 1.

Saturday, July 20

10 a.m. Neil Armstrong documentary premiere by producer Gareth Dodds, Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center.

“Apollo in the Archives: Selections from the Neil A. Armstrong Papers” exhibit, HSSE Library, Stewart Center

This is a ticketed event. No admittance after 4:30 p.m.

K-12 STEM activities begin, Kurz Atrium and outside Armstrong Hall

11:30 a.m. Book signings and author meet-and-greets featuring George Leopold, author of Calculated Risk: The Supersonic Life and Times of Gus Grissom, and John Norberg, co-author of Spacewalker, Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center Foyer

1:00 p.m. Flight director panel with past, present and future NASA flight directors. Seating is limited to the first 1,000 guests, Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center

4:17 p.m. Lunar landing celebration at the Neil Armstrong statue at 4:17 p.m. (exact time the lunar module landed on the Moon).
