The Indianapolis Zoo has lost a second African elephant. Kalina died just before noon Tuesday. It was just a week ago that Nyah died. Test results are not complete but indicate that both may have had a viral infection called EEHV. It’s one of the most deadly viral infections in elephants worldwide–but is most commonly found in Asian elephants. Zoo veterinarians began aggressive treatment with antibiotics after Kalina started showing symptoms last weekend. But there is no vaccine. EEHV does not affect humans or other animal species.
