State Briefs: Bond set for VFW shooter; Accused child molester pleads guilty in Clark County

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A southwestern Indiana man who police say opened fire inside a Veterans of Foreign Wars post crowded with people playing bingo has been ordered held on a $10 million bond. A Vanderburgh County judge set 70-year-old John Burghardt’s bond Thursday and set his next court appearance for Tuesday. Burghardt has not been formally charged in the Jan. 13 shooting at an Evansville VFW post. Evansville Police say he shot and wounded a man who had barred him from entering the post through a back door.

SEBRING, Fla. (AP) — Records show that the man suspected of killing five women at a Florida bank worked at a Walmart, a Mexican restaurant and an oil change shop in Indiana before moving to Florida and getting a job as a corrections officer. The Florida Department of Corrections personnel file for 21-year-old Zephen Xaver shows he stayed at each job in Plymouth, Indiana, for just a few months.

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A southern Indiana man has pleaded guilty to 20 counts of child molestation and faces up to 120 years in prison. The (Louisville, Kentucky) Courier Journal reported 19-year-old Michael Begin of Jeffersonville made the plea Friday in a Clark County courtroom. Authorities say he molested the children between the ages of 3 and 8 while working at a YMCA and as an elementary school teaching assistant.
