The Daviess County Commissioners held their first meeting of 2019 Tuesday.

They reorganized for the year with things staying the same.  Nathan Gabhart was renamed President of the Commissioners, Michael Taylor Vice President and Tom McCracken will remain Secretary.  All three also serve on the Drainage Board and Board of Finance.  The officers there remained the same with Gabhart as President, McCracken as Vice President and Taylor as Secretary.

The Commissioners made several beginning of the year appointments.  The County Attorney, Highway and Courthouse Maintenance Supervisors and Director of Weights and Measures all remain the same as 2018.  The new Veteran’s Service Officer for 2019 is Tony Potts.  He was appointed late last year to fill a retirement vacancy.

The Daviess County Highway Department spent more on stone in 2018 than ever before conducting maintenance and making repairs due to the wettest year ever in Daviess County.

Highway Supervisor Phil Cornelius told the Daviess County Commissioners that $750,000 was spent on stone.  Cornelius asked the public to be patient when it comes to gravel road maintenance this winter.  He says good weather this week should help them get some grading done.  He says there are 6 graders in the county to cover about 500 miles of gravel roads as well as 50 miles of fair-weather roads which dirt roads and river bottom roads.
