Local resolution passed which favors ending Daylight Saving Time

The Daviess County Council has gone on record favoring doing away with Daylight Saving Time.  The Council passed a resolution saying so at Wednesday’s Council meeting, the final one for 2018.

The resolution was proposed by Councilman Mike Sprinkle in light of State Senator Eric Bassler’s recent, re-opening the time zone debate.  The resolution that passed  favored doing away with the extra hour of daylight in the evening and not requiring Hoosiers to change their clocks twice a year.  The council realizes their vote carries no official weight other then expressing their opinion.  Time Zone decisions are made by the Federal Government, namely the Department of Transportation.  However, a state can unilaterally opt out of Daylight Saving Time.

Bassler said last month he would file a bill in the coming session to put all of Indiana on Central Time.  Part of the reason was school bus safety he said.  Bassler believes kids will be safer if they are not waiting for the bus in the dark for a portion of the first half of the school year.
