It’s the Great American Smokeout

Today is the annual Great American Smokeout.  It is  the American Cancer Society’s yearly event to encourage smokers to quit and to raise awareness of the health benefits of stopping smoking.

          Molley Healy is theTobacco Prevention Coordinator at Hoosier Uplands.  She say the theme for this year’s Smokeout is “Day 1”.  She says you can use the day as the first day on a journey to kick the habit.  Current stats say 1 in 5 Hoosiers smoke. That’s resulted in Indiana ranking 38 out of 50 states when it comes to overall health. 

          Meanwhile, Sharon Meade, who is the Patient Navigator at Daviess Community Hospital.  She says smokers get screened at the hospital to find out about their health…

   There are also some age requirements in order for insurance to pay for the tests.  For more on that screening contact the hospital.
