Indiana’s Young seeks to lead Senate GOP campaign committee

Indiana Sen. Todd Young launched a bid to become chairman of the National Republican Senate Committee during the 2020 election cycle.

A formal vote won’t be held until next Wednesday. But Young says he has the support of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and outgoing NRSC chairman Cory Gardner of Colorado and has yet to draw an opponent.

Republicans expanded their slim 51-49 Senate majority on Tuesday, defeating several Democrats running for re-election in states President Donald Trump won.

But 2020 will be a very different year, with limited pickup opportunities and an electoral map where they will largely be playing defense.

That includes swing states like North Carolina and Colorado, as well as red states that are in transition, like Georgia and Arizona.
