Indiana alcohol laws still being looked at

They paved the way for Sunday sales last year, but members of an alcohol study committee are still reviewing the rest of Indiana’s alcohol laws.

Legislators created the committee in response to the granting of alcohol permits to two Ricker’s convenience stores which expanded to incorporate burrito restaurants. That’s prompted discussion of other businesses that are classified as restaurants only when it comes to alcohol, from hardware stores to nail salons to civic centers. The committee is also reviewing the quota system which limits the number of available licenses in each city or town based on population.

Former Portland Representative and committee chairman Bill Davis says the goal is to make the alcohol code simpler and more consistent. The panel is scheduled to wrap up its work at the end of September.
