Speed limit placed on a portion of 1200-East

Speed limits on two sections of county roads were implemented by the Daviess County Commissioners Tuesday night.

Some residents of County Road 1200-east in the West Boggs area had petitioned the county to lower the un-posted road to 45 mph.  Currently, with no posted speed limit, the state says the limit is 55 mph.  Residents say traffic, mainly construction vehicles and trailers using the road in the mornings, were going up to 75 miles an hour at times creating dangerous situations.

A speed study conducted by the sheriff’s department determined that the section of 1200 between 500 North and 800 North had an average speed of 53.1, while between 350-North and 500-North the average was 54 miles an hour.  Under state and federal guidelines, a limit can only be raised or lowered 5 mph from the study’s findings.  After much discussion it was decided to put a 50 mph limit on  the section of 1200-East between  350 and 500.   Commissioner Michael Taylor said he would’ve like to have lowered it to 45 as requested but that’s not possible right now..

The other limit that was set was on 350-north between 1200-east and the county line. That section of road will be posted at 45mph.

In other action at last night’s Commissioners meeting…

As Phase 3 of the County Road 900-east improvement project is just about ending, Phase 4 is about to get underway.

The Daviess County Commissioners Tuesday voted to enter into a contract with Lochmueller Group for the engineering part of the process.   The contract is for $586,000 with 80% of that to be reimbursed by federal dollars.  Phase 4 includes the section of 900-East from 450-North to south of 300-North.  The contract also includes environmental and historic studies of a possible Phase 5 of the project which goes beyond 300-north.
