Josh Thompson to Coach the Vikings

MONTGOMERY (DLC)  Vincennes Lincoln Head Basketball Coach Josh Thompson has resigned from Lincoln and will take over the reins at Barr-Reeve this next season.  Thompson will replace long time coach Bryan Hughes who announced his retirement earlier this month from the Vikings.  Thompson spent two years with Lincoln and leaves with a record of 27-15.  Last year the Alices finished 17-9 under Thompson. The Barr-Reeve School Board was reported to be meeting today to officially hire Thompson for the position.  His previous coaching jobs were at Wood Memorial and Springs Valley.  The Wood Memorial Trojans won two sectional titles in a row with Thompson, in 2015 and ’16.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have a three-game lead in the National League Central following their 9-6 comeback win over St. Louis. The Cubs trailed 3-1 before scoring five times in the fifth inning, capped by Ian Happ’s two-run homer. Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist  drove in two runs apiece to help Chicago pad its division lead over Milwaukee.

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Zach Johnson is the clubhouse leader on a rainy day at the British Open. The 2015 champion birdied the tough 18th hole to shoot a 67 and move a stroke ahead of three players, including first-round leader Kevin Kisner and England’s Tommy Fleetwood. Rory McIlroy is two strokes back after shooting a 2-under 69.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Manny Machado plays his first game for the Dodgers tonight when the NL West leaders visit Milwaukee. Los Angeles traded five minor leaguers to Baltimore during thebreak for the four-time All-Star. The 26-year-old Machado was hitting .315 with 24 homers and 65 RBIs. Shortstop Corey Seager helped the Dodgers reach the World Series last year, but had Tommy John surgery in May.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Carmelo Anthony is moving on from Oklahoma City. A person with knowledge of the details tells The Associated Press the Thunder are sending the veteran forward and a 2022 protected first-round pick to Atlanta in exchange for Hawks guard Dennis Schroder and Mike Muscala. The Hawks are expected to waive Anthony, clearing the way for him to sign as a free agent elsewhere.

UNDATED (AP) — The NFL’s two-month old national anthem policy is on hold while the players union and the league talk things out. The two sides issued a joint statement last night, after The Associated Press obtained a copy of a Miami Dolphins’ discipline document classifying anthem protests as conduct punishable by a fine or suspension. The NFL decided in May that teams would be fined if players didn’t stand during the anthem, but left it up to teams how to punish players.

MOSCOW (AP) — A suspect has been detained in the killing of figure skater Denis Ten and another is being sought, according to media reports in Kazakhstan. Authorities say the 25-year-old was fatally stabbed in his hometown during a dispute with people who allegedly tried to steal a mirror from his car. Ten became Kazakhstan’s first Olympic figure skating medalist when he won bronze in Sochi in 2014.
