A motorist not wearing a seatbelt fled state police when they tried to stop him and crashed into a pickup during a chase.

At 11:42 Friday morning, 25-year-old Aaron Sanders of Petersburg was on 57 in Petersburg in a ’96 Mustang. Trooper John Davis attempted to stop him for a seatbelt violation when Sanders turned onto 61 south and continued at a high rate of speed to State Road 56 where he turned east and on to 257 south toward Velpen.

Sanders tried to pass a 2014 Chevy truck when the truck started to turn left into a private drive. That’s when the Mustang hit the truck which flipped onto its top.  The truck’s driver, 68-year-old Frank Rode of Velpen, was taken to Jasper’s Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Sanders was taken to Deaconess in Evansville for an injury to the face.

Sanders is expected to face several charges related to the chase.  It was also found he was wanted in Daviess County for Failing to Register as a Sex Offender.

Both vehicles were totaled. 257 at Pike Count Road 200 South near Velpen was closed for two hours after the crash.
