Changes to student handbooks at Vincennes Community Schools are spelling new security and safety protocols.

Monday night the school board approved changes for more strict policies when it comes to school visitors.  The handbook now reflects what the board already had approved in March which was an electronic background check for all visitors checking into the office.  A photo will be taken and a quick visitor pass created to be worn at all times by the visitor.

The Vincennes Sun Commercial reports other changes affect students.  Unless a backpack is made of clear plastic it must be stored in a locker when arriving and not carried from class to class.  Also any totes, purses or other bags cannot be any larger than the student handbook.  Lincoln Principal Steve Combs was quoted by the newspaper as saying some have said they don’t have a backpack but they carry around a 40 pound bag which is what is being remedied with the new rules.
