Lester Smith, age 95, of Washington, passed away April 18, 2018 at 2:49 a.m. at Daviess Community Hospital.

He was born on March 2, 1923 in Washington to Alfonso L. and Lillian E.  (Ramsey) Smith. He was a WWII Navy Veteran receiving multiple service medals and had retired in 1986 from B&O Railroad where he was a Conductor for 37 years. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church and volunteered for the St Vincent DePaul Society for over ten years.

He is survived by two sons, Samuel (Mari Lynn) Smith of Texas and Lester Kent (Cathy) Smith of Ohio; three grandchildren, Nate (Allison) Smith of Texas, Kyle (Kimberly) Smith of Petersburg and Gail Robinson of Columbus; eight great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Smith on September 18, 2017, whom he married April 27, 1947; parents; son, Carl Leo Smith; grandson, Matt Smith; two sisters Ganelle Fox and Marguerite Bailey; five brothers, Roy Smith, Jack Smith, Emil Smith, Melvin Smith and Kenneth Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 PM on Friday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church with Father Paul Ferguson as celebrant. Burial will follow in St John Cemetery with military gravesite rites by the Washington American Legion and VFW. Visitation will be from Noon – 1:00 PM on Friday at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church.
