Indiana’s population will grow by roughly 660,000 residents by 2050—a 10 percent increase over this 35-year stretch—according to new population projections released by the Indiana Business Research Center. Growth will be heavily front-loaded, with 60 percent of these gains taking place by 2030. All told, the state’s population total will climb from an estimated 6.61 million residents to 7.27 million in 2050.

Locally, according to the new projections, Daviess County is the only county in the immediate area expected to grow significantly by 2050. The numbers show an increase of 30% in the next 30 years, with a  median age of 30 to 40.     Dubois County will increase in population up to 10% in the next 30 years with a median age in the early 40’s.

All other surrounding counties are expected to see a drop in population.

Knox County and Martin County’s populations are expected to decline up to 10% by 2050 with a median age of 30 to 40 in Knox and 42 to 44 in Martin.

Pike County and Greene County’s population is expected to drop over 10% by 2050 with a median age of 44 to 50.

Marion and Lake Counties are expected to have the greatest number of people in the state over the next 25 years or so.
