22-year-old Makayla Carpenter is facing criminal charges after court records indicate she held her hand over her 2-year-old son’s mouth for 45 minutes, which made it hard for him to breathe.

Police say there is video evidence to show that Carpenter was slapping the child, cussing, and standing over him with her hands on the toddler. A family member told the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office about Carpenter’s behavior.

When confronted by police, they say Carpenter admitted to slapping the toddler and placing her hand over his mouth for a period of 45 minutes.

The deputy’s report said Carpenter admitted to him she knew she was making it somewhat difficult for the child to breathe normally, and she told the deputy  she felt like a monster.  The Indiana Department of Child Services has launched an investigation.

Carpenter is scheduled for a pretrial conference on February 22.
