The month long period for political candidates to enter Indiana’s May primaries has opened

Yesterday the Daviess County Clerk’s Office was busy with candidates officially filing to be on the ballot. Several had already announced their intentions to seek an office or re-election to the current office they serve in.

Daviess County will have a new sheriff at the end of the year as current Sheriff Jerry Harbstreit is finishing up his eight year reign.  Indiana law says a sheriff can only serve 8 years consecutively.  Harbstreit has announced his intention to retire from the department after decades of service.

Filing yesterday at the Clerk’s office for Sherriff was current Chief Deputy Gary Allison.  Also filing for Sheriff was Deputy Troy Fuhs. Both candidates are Republicans and so far that’s the only contested race in the May Primary.  The winner in May will be on the November ballot.

Also filing yesterday on the Republican ballot were incumbent County Council members Pat Dant, Mike Myers and Dave Smith.  Also filing for re-election were County Assessor Dennis Eaton and County Auditor Patty Ball.

Meanwhile County Clerk Janice Williams has announced she will seek re-election this year.

Candidates have until February 9th to file and be on the ballot this May.
