The 10th annual Watermelon Drop in Vincennes is tomorrow night, New Year’s Eve.

The event has again gained national attention. The current
issue of Country Woman magazine and on-line Reader’s Digest site features a large photo of the Watermelon Drop with the headline, “Countdown to Quirky.”

The event will be starting at 9-pm tomorrow complete with live music in a giant heated tent. The band is “The Coatney’s” and there’ll be a beer and wine sales area.

The famous 18 foot, 500 lb watermelon, which appears at other festivals and parades throughout the year will rise in the sky and drop 18 watermelons onto the “splatform” at the stroke of midnight to mark the start of 2018.

Watermelons are used to celebrate in Vincennes due to the heritage of the crop in the county.  There are more than 7,000 acres of watermelon farms in or around Knox County.  All of the watermelons in the drop are locally grown.

lliana Watermelon Queen Katie Ellerman will  welcome the audience and reign over the Watermelon Drop.
