Contract Vote with Economic Development Foundation Rescinded

A contract with the County Economic Development Foundation was a point of interest at Tuesday’s Daviess County Commissioners Meeting as Washington Attorney Harry Hanson explained several problems with the contract which the Foundation presented in August.

Hanson noted several of the provisions conflicted with state statutes and that some provisions required by law had been omitted in the Commissioners version of the contract.  After hearing Hanson, the Commissioners voted to rescind their August vote.   After that vote Commissioner Michael Taylor strongly voiced his opinion that the Commissioners actions have set the County behind in attracting economic development.  County Council President Mike Sprinkle and several other members of the Council were in attendance.  Sprinkle repeated Taylor’s concern about the Daviess County losing out on economic growth because of the Commissioners lack of action saying something had to happen soon.  Commissioner Nathan Gabhart responded saying they had been working on the issue for six months, to which Sprinkle responded quote “And nothing has happened”.

In other actions at Tuesday’s meeting

The Commissioners heard from County Treasurer Elaine Wellman and A.I.C. representative Jackie Clements who explained a new method to collect delinquent taxes.  Clements explained that the General Assembly had provided a method by which the tax returns of taxpayers with delinquent taxes could be intercepted and the state, county, or other taxing unit could withhold the amount of unpaid taxes from tax returns.  The Commissioners agreed to sign on to the new program.
