Chief Deputy Gary Allison running for Sheriff

          A 30-year veteran of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department has announced his intention to run for County Sheriff in the 2018 election.

          Gary Allison made his official announcement Monday at the Daviess County Courthouse.  Current Sheriff Jerry Harbstreit cannot run again due to term limits and is planning to retire.  Allison has served as Chief Deputy under Harbstreit for the past five years.

          In his announcement Allison says his he’s ready to move into the Sheriff’s Position.

Standing on the steps of the Daviess County Courthouse, Daviess County Chief Deputy
Sheriff Gary Allison today announced his intention to seek the Republican Party
nomination for Sheriff in the May 2018 primary.

“During my career as a public servant, I have never wavered in my willingness to
responsibly and understandingly serve others as a leader in the community. I am aware
that the success of this position is gained through honesty, trust, knowledge, and
dedication; traits that I feel I have demonstrated during a career working to protect the
residents of Daviess County,” said Allison. “With the law enforcement opportunities I
have been fortunate to experience thus far, it would be an honor to continue my service to
you as your next Sheriff.”

A veteran of over 30 years with the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, Allison is a
Washington High School graduate and a Vincennes University graduate with a Criminal
Justice Law Enforcement degree. After earning a Criminal Justice Law Enforcement
degree from Vincennes University. Allison has served under four sheriffs in his time with
the department, beginning in 1987 when Sheriff Everett Beasley hired him as a Jailer,
Dispatcher, and Reserve Deputy. In 1993, Allison was appointed Deputy after graduating
from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. After working the road for five years, he
was appointed Detective in 1998, and worked through the ranks to become Lieutenant
Detective. In 2007, Allison was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration as a
Task Force Officer, Evansville post of duty.

Current Sheriff Jerry Harbstreit appointed Allison Chief Deputy Sheriff in 2012. Sheriff
Harbstreit stood with Allison as his Chief Deputy announced his candidacy.
“During my time as Chief Deputy, it has been my privilege to serve beside Sheriff Jerry
Harbstreit,” said Allison. “The past five years working alongside Sheriff Harbstreit have
afforded me the opportunity to become familiar with and better suited to handle the
difficult challenges that this department and the community endure daily.”

A lifelong Daviess County resident, Allison is the son of Beverly “Kay” Allison and the
late Tom Allison. His grandparents are the late Walter and Genevieve “Ginny” Wolkins,
and Neal and Josephine Allison. He has two daughters, Hannah and Jessica Allison.
