Phyllis Anne Uitts Smith, 83, long time resident of Vincennes, passed away on July 13, 2017 in Greenwood, IN. Phyllis was born on January 24, 1934 in Clinton County the daughter of Walter Raymond and Carrie Lucile (Jaynes) Uitts. She married George R. Smith on June 26, 1955 and he preceded her in death on May 29, 2008.

Phyllis graduated from Scircleville High School in 1951 and from Purdue University in May of 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and worked as a school clerk at Washington Elementary from August 1974 until June of 1976, as a receptionist for Hart Bell Law firm from June of 1976 until July of 1977. In July of 1977 she became statistician and executive secretary for Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service until October of 1982. In 1982 she became grant manager and Ombudsman, and Title V Coordinator of Older Hoosier Program, and in 1985 she became Director of Nutrition Services for Older Hoosier program in Knox, Daviess, Dubois, Greene, Martin and Pike counties until her retirement in 1998. Phyllis was awarded the Toastmasters International and was the 1998 recipient of the Vincennes University President’s award. She also assisted her husband George with organizing Alpha Chapter’s ballroom dances, which raised funds to maintain Vincennes University’s Wurlitzer organ in the Green Activities Center.

Survivors include her daughter Cheryl Sutton and her husband Matt of Greenwood, IN, son’s Kent Smith of Arlington, IN, Eric Smith and his wife Angie of Louisville, KY; brother, Willard Wilson and his wife Marilyn of Frankfort, IN; grandson’s Brian Sutton and his wife Johanna, Taylor Sutton, Kevin Smith and his wife Brooke, Gregory Smith; and one great granddaughter Dezi Smith. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, husband George R. Smith and sister’s Donna Miller and Esther Braden.

Funeral services for Phyllis will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, July 17, 2017 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 524 Broadway with Rev. Matt Swisher officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with Phyllis’ family from 11:00 am until the hour of service time of 1:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home.
