Eight empty boots on the steps of the Daviess County Courthouse Monday represented a fallen solder in recently military campaigns.  It was something new at this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony in Washington.

The Washington Times Herald  says among those represented was Army Corporal Darrell Smith of Otwell. He was part of the Indiana National Guard 152 that was deployed to the Middle East out of Washington in 2003. Smith was a gunner on a Humvee and died of drowning when his vehicle overturned and fell into a canal in Iraq.

In his address to the crowd, Washington Mayor Joe Wellman said we need to remember the real heroes of our time which include the soldiers who died for America’s Freedom.  He said our freedoms are built on their sacrifice.
