REZONING REQUEST

The Washington City Council took no action, yet, on a rezoning request from Jordan and Miriam Briggeman. They want to change the zoning of property they own at the corner of Parkdale and Bedford Road from R-1 to R-2.    A public hearing on the request was held prior to last night’s city council meetin

The Briggeman’s are wanting to build two duplexes and a three bedroom house on the 1 acre plot.   Two neighbors complained about the change saying they were concerned about increased traffic and having rental property in the area.   But Briggeman pointed out that under the R-1 zoning he could build four, three-bedroom homes on the property with a potential for more traffic and higher resident density than the proposed duplexes and home he plans to build.   Briggeman also told the Council his project would increase property values in the area and help meet Washington’s severe middle income housing shortage.   The Council heard the first reading of the proposed rezoning ordinance and will take final action at the next Council meeting.

Washington Mayor Joe Wellman updated the city council last night about the on-going discussions with the State on the condition of old U.S. 50 through Washington.

In action last night the council approved a new position in the Washington City Building Commissioner’s Office.

The position is titled Assistant to the County Plan Director.  Amber Showalter will move from being the secretary in the office to the new position. Current Building Commissioner Brian Sergesketter also serves as County Plan Director through an inter-local agreement between the city and county.  The county pays for the two positions. There was an understanding agreed to which states that if the county at some point doesn’t need plan director assistance then the job will be eliminated.
