Two small high schools in Parke County will be consolidated in response to ongoing enrollment drops.

School board members voted to combine the Rockville and Turkey Run Junior-Senior High Schools Wednesday night.

The plan calls for grades 9-12 to attend Rockville High School, with grades 6-8 going to the Turkey Run school starting with the 2018-19 school year. Rockville currently has about 220 high school students, while Turkey Run has about 160.

District Superintendent Tom Rohr says it’s difficult to offer comprehensive academic programs at such small schools.

District officials have been considering the consolidation for more than three years. Board members rejected a consolidation plan last year.

Board president Scott Ramsay called the decision once forced by necessity.
