Mary Ruth Massie

With her granddaughter, Jillian Breidenstein, holding her hand, Mary Ruth Massie, 95, passed away Wednesday evening at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis.


Mary Ruth was born Nov. 20, 1920, in Washington, to Leonard M. and Mayme A. (Dant) Grannan.
She graduated from Washington Catholic High School in 1939 and attended Vincennes University. She retired as postmaster from the United States Post Office after 30 years. She was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, was a member of and served as secretary for the Daviess Community Hospital Auxiliary for 17 years and was also a member of the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a gentle and loving daughter, mother, wife, sister, friend and co-worker who always found time for everyone.
She is survived by one daughter, Sandra Massie of Carmel, Indiana; one sister, Laverne Grannan of Washington; two grandchildren, Jillian (Kurt) Breidenstein of Indianapolis and Melissa (Peter) Wenzler of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan; and four great-grandchildren, Otto, James, Meridith and Grace Wenzler.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold J. Massie, whom she married in October 1942, in Helena, Montana. She is also preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Massie Rohrer Jacobs; two sisters, Doris (Harold) Wilson and Teresa (Sheldon) Woodruff; and seven brothers, Leonard N., James R., John E., Carl, Denis M., Howard and William.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the grade school cafeteria.
