Area festivals abound this weekend

Strassenfest, Old Settler’s  and Watermelon Festival happening in Dubois, Daviess and Knox Counties.

Odon’s Old Settlers Days starts tonight.  It’s the oldest festival in the state and has been held every year for 131 years.

The parade kicks things off tonight at 5:30. The carnival opens at 6. The Grand Marshal Presentation is at 7 and the Floral Hall opens at 9.

The entertainment tonight is Rock N’ Roll music from Terry Lee at the Rockaboogie Band.

The 38th annual Jasper Strassenfest starts today.  It’s a celebration of the German heritage of Jasper and Dubois County.  It’s always held the first week of August.

Activities today include a Youth Golf Tourney at 9 this morning.  Exibits and programs at the Museum are open at 10.  There’ll be a Children’s Box Parade at 4:45 starting at the city police station.

The carnival rides open at 5 tonight along with the food and game booths.  The official opening ceremony is at 6:15 on the main stage.  There’s a guitar pull on the main stage at 7:30 featuring 9 performers.  A Garth Brooks Tribute featuring Shawn Gerhard is at 8 on the West Side Stage.

Also at 5:30 this evening, Lt. Governor Eric Holcomb is due to make an appearance at the Strassenfest as he continues his gubernatorial campaign.

          The Annual Knox County Watermelon Festival, hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, will be held this weekend in downtown Vincennes. The two day festival has something for everyone; whether you want to test your watermelon seed spitting skills or try your hand at creating award winning barbeque.

Entertainment includes live bands, food and craft vendors, a pet show, a baby and toddler contest, and the Watermelon Queen contest.

For the first time this year, there’ll be a carnival at the Watermelon Festival.

Festivities get underway at 5 PM on Friday. On Saturday, the Great American Grill off begins at 7 AM with various activities going on throughout the day until dusk.
