It’s the first day of school  in Washington.

The 2016-2017 school year is officially underway in Washington.   Wednesday the teachers and staff members met in the Washington High School Auditorium to hear an opening day talk from 2015 Indiana Teacher of the Year and finalist for National Teacher of the Year, Kathy Nimmer.

Nimmer, who is a English and creative writing teacher at Harrison High School in West Lafayette, is also the National Association for the Blind, 2016 Blind Teacher of the Year.   Nimmer said her position has allowed her to help energize teachers for the coming year.

Prior to Nimmer’s talk, Washington Superintendent Dr. Dan Roach introduced new faculty and staff members.  To open the day the teachers were served breakfast by Sudexo, the Washington Schools new food and custodial services provider.

Teachers spent the remainder of Wednesday putting the finishing touches on their classrooms before students reported for their first day of school today.
