County applying for a grant for road repair

Daviess County will be applying for a Community Crossroads Grant to pay for two million dollars in road improvements.

The Washington Times Herald  http://www.washtimesherald.com/ reports that the 50/50 match grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation would be used on County Road 650-East from US 50 north to 1000-North and on 550-North from 900-East to 1200-East. County Highway Superintendent Phil Cornelius told the newspaper those roads have taken a beating as heavy truck traffic was re-routed to them due to the construction project on 900-East.

The local 1 million dollar match will come from the 1.6 million which the county highway department received when the state returned funds through the county’s Local Option Income Tax.  Cornelius said the grant money and local match will free up other monies to be used elsewhere in the county on road maintenance.

The grant application is due July 31st.   The grant awards are expected this fall.
