Ferman Dee “Sailor” Byrer, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Thursday in Odon at the age of 88, surrounded by his family. 

He was born in Daviess County on Oct. 16, 1927, to Julian and Ruby (Faith) Byrer. He married his loving wife, Harriet T. (Butcher) Byrer, on Aug. 9, 1952.
Ferman was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Odon VFW Post 9627 and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He retired after 32 years from the Daviess County Highway Department. He was a precinct committeeman for several years. Officials said that no other employee had been with them for that many years. Ferman enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and fishing.
Ferman is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Harriet Byrer of Odon; children Mike Byrer, Patty (Alan) Dyer, both of Plainville, and Brenda (Jerry) Edelman of Bloomfield; grandchildren Josh, Seth and Shane Dyer, Angie (Wes) Milner, Jason (Tara) Edelman, Donetta (Brad Kaiser) Drieman; great-grandchildren Dalton, Briley, Briley, John, Katelyn, Emma, Brianna, Cole and Brianna.
Ferman was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Eddie Byrer; three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Meng Family Funeral Home in Odon with grandson Seth Dyer officiating. Ferman will be laid to rest in the Kilgore Cemetery in Raglesville following military rites provided by the Odon VFW Post 9627.
Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday.
