Man dies after farm accident, meth arrest made in Washington, a phone scam warning out of Greene County, GOP delegates at the State Convention are nominating candidates and establishing a platform…..

 

 

MAN DIES FROM FARM RELATED ACCIDENT

A Daviess County man died yesterday as the result of a Thursday farming accident north of Montgomery on Daviess County Road 500-north. Authorities say that 41-year-old Andrew Graber was operating a bean drill with a team of horses and he was run over by the drill.  The Amish farmer and minister, was found in the field and was later flown to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.  He succumbed to injuries on Friday.


METH ARREST

Washington City police report they arrested 25-year-old Jacob H. Batchelor of Washington on Friday.  He’s charged with possession of meth, reckless possession of paraphernalia and  maintaining a common nuisance. Bond was posted.

 

PHONE SCAM

The Greene County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a phone scam. The department reports a man identifying himself as an Investigator with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department with the name of Rob Jones makes a call.  He says he’s from the warrant citation division and speaks with a southern accent.  He tells the party they’ve missed a Federal Grand Jury and an officer will be coming to make an arrest.  He leaves a call back number. When called back by authorities, the number transfers to an answering service.  Calls have been made in Greene and Monroe Counties.  Authorities report they don’t employ a Rob Jones and don’t make such calls.  They say the next step will likely be an attempt to solicit money, information of the availability of the homeowner.  If you receive a call report it to authorities.

 


US 5O BRIDGE WORK

 Starting Monday, contractors working for the Indiana Department of Transportation will be shutting down one lane on both the heast and west bound lanes of US 50 near Maysville.  Crews will be performing some bridge maintenance including cleaning and joint sealing.  Each direction will have one 12 foot lane open at all times.  Work will last through mid August.  Be sure and slow down and stay alert near the work crews

 


SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED

-Hoosier Uplands has announced their scholarship award winners for this year.  Every year, $1300 scholarships are given out to one senior each from the 11 counties that Hoosier Uplands serves.  Hoosier Uplands is a non-profit agency based in Mithcell,  serves as an Area Agency on Aging, Community Action Agency, licensed Home Health Care and Hospice agency, and Community Housing Development Organization. The agency serves Martin County and and the two seniors who received scholarships include Alexis Willis of Loogootee and Brittany Cooper of Shoals.

-Jasper Engines and Transmissions announced the winners of its annual scholarship program. Applicants must be dependent children of full-time JASPER Associates. This year’s recipients were Alexis Elliott of Washington High School, Charles O’ Neiel of Barr Reeve and Tyler Resler of Loogootee.


GOP CONVENTION

Indiana Republicans convene this weekend to finish choosing their ticket for the fall election. The suspense at the convention is over downticket races. Yorktown superintendent Jennifer McCormick and anti-Common Core activist Dawn Wooten are competing for state school superintendent, while four candidates are seeking the nomination for attorney general.

Delegates are also poised to maintain support for marriage between a man and woman in the party’s platform.

Ahead of the convention, a committee tasked with exploring changes to the platform voted not to revise language that party members added in 2014 that favors marriage between a man and woman.

Representing Daviess County as Delegates at the convention are State Senator Eric Bassler, Washington Mayor Joe Wellman, Elaine Wellman, County Councilman Mike Myers, John Myers,  Sue Anne Myers,  Grant Swartzentruber, Peg Stephens, Tom Stephens and Patty Ball.
