Tax Abatement Forms Took Priority at Daviess County Council Meeting Wednesday

At Wednesday’s June meeting of the Daviess County Council, the Council members were up a tree about what to do with several county businesses that have failed to file State required forms needed before the Council could vote to continue their tax abatements.   Council President Mike Myers said these companies are no longer in compliance.   County Attorney Grant Swartzentruber told the Council the forms are required by state law.  Swartzentruber also showed the Council a letter that was sent to all abatement holders reminding them of the deadline to submit the necessary paperwork.   Council member Jo Arthur said it was impossible to make decisions about continuing the abatements without the information.   At Myers suggestion, the Council agreed to send another reminder, setting a July 1 deadline for receiving the forms.  Myers noted that if the forms are not received by the deadline the continuation of those abatements could be denied.

MacAllister Machinery, Tarbert Properties, and Sam and Madonna Jones had all complied with the state requirements and had the continuation of their abatements approved.
In other business the Council approved a temporary summer employee at $9.25/hour for the Extension Office and set the timeline for hearings and adoption of the 2017 budget.  The Council also agreed to examine procedures in using Economic Development Income Tax revenue to pay Economic Development bonds.
